The Economic Contribution of the Shanghai Film & Television Industry 2012

Launched during the Shanghai International Film Festival (June 15 – 23), the Economic Contribution of the Shanghai Film & Television Industry report was commissioned by the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai and prepared by Artisan Gateway, a leading film and cinema industry consulting firm. At the launch, Rance Pow, President of Artisan Gateway, said that it is essential to ensure that intellectual property rights are protected before considering how to raise film investment and make money out of any movie projects. Mike Ellis, President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, MPA, participated in a roundtable discussion which followed the launch of the report.

The key findings of the Economic Contribution of the Shanghai Film & Television Industry report found that in 2012, the film and television industry is estimated to have contributed:
• USD 8.4 billion (CNY 53.3 billion) in gross economic output;
• USD 2.2 billion (CNY 14.4 billion) value-added to the Shanghai economy;
• Supported more than 70,000 jobs; and
• USD 2.4 billion (CNY 15.2 billion) in total labor income
